WiK's Pix Field Backup Support

WiK's Pix Field Backup helps photographers create verified backups from a camera card to external storage using iPhone or iPad.

Before you start

1. Connect your camera card and destination SSD to iPhone or iPad using compatible hardware and sufficient power.
2. Confirm that the camera card appears in Files and has at least one supported media folder at its root.
3. Choose the card as Camera card and the SSD as Backup destination.
4. A green indicator means the selected location is available. A red indicator means it is not currently available or, for a source, does not contain a supported camera-media folder. While the app is open and idle, it rechecks connected storage automatically.

Camera cards are one-job selections. After a successful verified backup, the app removes the selected card from the form without changing the card itself. If you temporarily disconnect the same card during the current app session, the app can restore it automatically when iPadOS grants access and its physical volume identity matches. Choose the card again after relaunching the app, or whenever Files requires fresh permission.

Supported camera and video cards

WiK's Pix Field Backup accepts card roots containing one or more of the following folders: DCIM, PRIVATE, AVCHD, MP_ROOT, XDROOT, XFROOT, CANON, CLIPS, CONTENTS, or BPAV.

These layouts cover standard still-photo cards as well as common Canon XF, Sony AVCHD / XAVC / XDCAM EX, and Panasonic P2 video workflows. When more than one supported folder exists, all of them are included in the backup. MISC is intentionally excluded.

Backup and verification

Start a verified backup after selecting at least one destination. The status window shows copying first, then verifying. Standard verification checks each destination file against the source file size. Use SHA-256 Verification is enabled by default and compares SHA-256 digests for every source and destination file; you can change it in Advanced Options. During verification, the current digest uses the full available width on one line and shortens from the middle only when necessary.

WiK's Pix Field Backup shows the actual size of the recognized camera media that will be copied. Each destination shows the required size and its free space: green means ready, yellow means space is tight but sufficient, and red means there is not enough room.

When you select a card, WiK's Pix Field Backup checks currently accessible destinations and lets you know if the card was already copied there. During backup, it skips destinations that already contain the verified card and continues with any other selected destinations. It also continues when another selected destination is disconnected or lacks space. If all selected destinations already contain the verified card, it tells you instead of copying again.

If a backup is cancelled, start the same card backup again after reconnecting the drives. WiK's Pix Field Backup checks the separate staging folder, reuses files that were already copied successfully, removes any incomplete partial file, and continues with the remaining files. Only after verification succeeds does it move the completed backup into the destination's WPFB root using the timestamp name MM.DD.YY_HH.MM.SS. Existing backups whose folder names begin with WPFB_ remain fully supported.

After cancellation, WiK's Pix Field Backup lets you keep the staging data for a later resume or delete it from every available selected destination. Completed, verified backup folders are not deleted by this action.

Backup Tools on the main screen shows storage used by incomplete staging data and existing backups on selected, mounted destinations. Incomplete Backups shows the destination, space used, and last-modified time for each item. Select one or more items, then confirm Delete Selected to remove only those partial backups. No staging data is deleted automatically.

Manage Existing Backups lets you review and verify previously completed backups. Search by backup folder, Shoot Name, or destination, then filter the list to show All Backups, No Shoot Name, or any Shoot Name currently found on connected destinations. Backups with the same Shoot Name are grouped under that Shoot Name but remain separate entries identified by destination. Multiple selected backups verify from top to bottom in display order. The list automatically brings the active backup into view and deselects each item after it verifies successfully; failed and unprocessed items remain selected. Use the share icon beside a backup to export a localized verification report with its saved manifest details, verification method, file count, sizes, location, Original Verification date, and Last Verified date. The displayed location begins with the selected destination drive rather than the device's internal filesystem root. A manual re-verification updates Last Verified while preserving the original completed-copy verification date.

If a completed backup folder was renamed outside the app, a successful re-verification can safely update its legacy manifest paths when all recorded media files still match. Management errors remain in Backup Tools so the list stays open. You can remove an individual backup only after confirming the deletion. If you delete the last backup inside a Shoot Name folder, that now-empty Shoot Name folder is also removed; an otherwise-empty WPFB app backup root is removed too.

Advanced Options

• Appearance: WPFB uses a consistent dark burgundy theme with charcoal-grey controls and light text for dependable contrast.
• Use SHA-256 Verification: enabled by default, it adds digest verification to the standard file-size check. It provides a stronger integrity check but takes longer.
• Concurrent Backups: available when two or more destinations are selected. When you add a second destination, the app asks once whether you want to enable it and remembers that choice for future multi-destination backups. It copies and verifies eligible destinations at the same time. The source card is never cleared unless every destination completes verification.
• Backup Notifications: sends localized completion and failure notifications on the iPhone or iPad. Notification permission is requested only when this option is enabled, and the preference is saved. For backups performed on the paired iPhone, the included WPFB Apple Watch companion requests its own notification permission once. This allows a result to appear with sound and haptic feedback while the Watch screen is asleep. If the Watch is not immediately reachable, completion and failure results from the paired iPhone are queued through Apple's Watch connectivity system for later delivery. iPad backup results cannot be sent to Apple Watch.
• Test Apple Watch Alert: under Debugging Options, checks that an Apple Watch is paired and that WPFB is installed, then briefly retries while showing a localized sending indicator. Test alerts are live-only and are not queued: keep WPFB open and active on the Watch while testing. If WPFB is missing, install it from the Watch app on your iPhone and open it once before testing. The tool displays a localized warning when no Watch is paired, the companion is not installed, or it remains unreachable.
• Keep Screen Awake: under Debugging Options, keeps the screen awake while WiK's Pix Field Backup is open. It is off by default; the screen still remains awake during active copying and verification.
• Shoot Names: optionally label a backup workflow. Names are saved for quick reuse only after a backup begins; saved names are alphabetized and can be added or removed in Advanced Options.

The app warns when the device battery is 20% or lower and it is not charging. Connect power before starting a large backup whenever possible. It also automatically reduces backup activity when the iPhone or iPad is under thermal pressure.

WiK's Pix Field Backup uses a success sound/haptic for verified completion and a distinct error sound/haptic for genuine backup failures. Intentional cancellations do not play the failure cue.

Apple Watch companion

The included Apple Watch app is named WPFB and uses the same icon and dark red theme as the iPhone and iPad app. It does not run backups or access camera cards and external drives. It receives only localized backup result information from the paired iPhone.

Apple Watch pairs with iPhone rather than iPad. WPFB therefore receives results only when the backup is performed on its paired iPhone. Backups performed in the iPad app still produce their enabled iPad notifications, but those results are not delivered to Apple Watch.

Allow notifications when WPFB asks on the Watch. This permission is separate from the iPhone notification setting because watchOS controls notifications created by a Watch app. With permission enabled, completed and failed backup results can produce a Watch alert, sound, and haptic even when the WPFB screen is asleep. Focus modes, Silent Mode, and notification-delivery settings can still affect how an alert is presented.

The Watch screen displays a result received while it is active, but it intentionally returns to Waiting for a backup result after the app is closed and reopened. This prevents an old result from looking like the outcome of a new backup.

Languages and regions

On first launch, choose the app language. You can change it later using the Language control at the bottom of the main screen.

These are language-coverage regions. App Store availability is controlled separately by the developer’s territory selections in App Store Connect.

Clear Card

Clear Card is off whenever the app opens. When turned on, it removes all contents from the selected camera card only after every selected destination is safely verified. If any selected destination is skipped because it is disconnected or lacks space, the source card is not cleared. It does not reformat the card.

If every selected destination already has a verified copy of the card, WiK's Pix Field Backup asks whether to clear the card when this option is enabled.

Troubleshooting

• Source not found: reconnect the card, then use the refresh button.
• Source not valid: select the root of the card that contains a supported media folder, not an individual media folder.
• Destination not found: reconnect the SSD, then refresh its status.
• Not enough free space: select another destination or make room on the drive. Backups can still continue to any other selected destination that is ready.
• Backup cancelled: the files already completed remain on the destination; start the same backup again to check and resume the remaining files.
• Apple Watch test unavailable: confirm that an Apple Watch is paired, then open the Watch app on your iPhone and install WPFB. Open WPFB and leave it active on the Watch while using Test Apple Watch Alert. If automatic app installation is enabled, the companion may install with the iPhone app; otherwise install it manually. The live-only test is not stored for later delivery.
• Apple Watch backup alert not shown: confirm that the backup was performed on the iPhone paired with the Watch; iPad backup results cannot be delivered to Apple Watch. On the Watch, open Settings > Notifications > WPFB and allow notifications. Also confirm that Backup Notifications is enabled in the paired iPhone app and that Focus or notification-delivery settings are not suppressing the alert. Completion and failure results may be delivered later if the Watch is temporarily disconnected.
